Applications and Mechanical Properties of SM520 Steel
SM520 structural steel is widely used in engineering applications where moderate to high strength is required along with good fabrication properties. It is especially suitable for the construction of bridges, offshore platforms, heavy machinery, and steel frames. The mechanical properties of SM520 include a yield strength of at least 355 MPa and good elongation, making it suitable for dynamic load-bearing structures. It also provides reliable performance in seismic zones due to its toughness.
The three subgrades SM520A, SM520B, and SM520C differ mainly in their impact testing conditions. SM520C, for example, is tested at lower temperatures and provides enhanced notch toughness.
SM520 is compatible with various welding techniques including SMAW, GMAW, and SAW. It conforms well to international equivalents such as EN S355J2 or ASTM A572 Grade 50, making it suitable for both domestic and export-oriented projects.
