Carburizing Process of 35CrMo Steel

Carburizing is a heat treatment process in which steel is placed in a medium with sufficient carbon potential and heated to an austenite state and kept warm to form a carbon-rich layer.

Specifically, 35CrMo steel is placed in an environmental medium with a high carbon potential, and the highly active carbon atoms are diffused into the interior of the 35CrMo steel to form a carburized layer with a certain thickness of high carbon content, and then quenched and tempered, so that the surface layer of 35CrMo steel has a high carbon content, while the core has a lower carbon content because the carbon content maintains the original concentration, it can improve the wear resistance of the surface layer of 35CrMo steel while maintaining the high impact resistance of the core. Carburizing with methanol-kerosene dripping gas, the cracking products of methanol at high temperature, such as H2O and CO2, oxidize CH4 and C. The furnace gas composition and carbon potential can be kept within a certain range.

Carburizing can improve the mechanical properties of 35CrMo steel in many ways, improve the hardness and wear resistance of 35CrMo steel, and reduce the impact toughness and fracture toughness (impact toughness and fracture toughness increase with the higher the carbon content on the surface and the deeper the carbon layer, the more it is reduced), the fatigue strength of 35CrMo steel can be improved at the same time (the high strength of the carbon layer contributes to the improvement of fatigue strength).
