Heat Treatment and Processing of JIS G 4051 Steel Grades
JIS G 4051 steel grades can be heat treated to achieve enhanced strength, toughness, and wear resistance. The process typically includes normalizing, quenching, and tempering. For example, S45C is often normalized at 850–900°C, then quenched at 800–850°C and tempered between 500–650°C depending on the required hardness and toughness.
Machinability is one of the key advantages of these steels. In cold-drawn or normalized condition, they provide excellent dimensional control and surface quality, making them ideal for CNC machining or precision fabrication.
Weldability varies by carbon content. Lower-carbon grades like S15C weld well, while higher-carbon steels like S55C may require preheating and post-weld heat treatment to avoid cracking.
JIS G 4051 steels are essential materials in mechanical design where both performance and processability are critical.
